I love our Robot Birthday theme, inspired by our very own "Speckles the Robot" and his friends Freckles and Knuckles. Kids love them too, and this art party is suitable for kids of all ages.

The birthday guests do the background first, using a sponge brush and acrylic paint on the canvas. I do not add water, as we need the background to dry fairly quickly so that we can add the body shapes.

While the background dries, the kids sketch-out and colour how they will do their robots. They then block-out the body shapes using pre-mixed cream coloured paint. There is always some interpretation of this (as in all of our children's art lessons) and the surprises and personality in the paintings are always my favourite part!

After the final colour shapes have been decided upon and added (robot hands, feet, antennae, eyes) they kids head into the party room for pizza, cake and festivities and the paintings can dry. I will blot some particularly wet spots on the painting but I try not to affect the look. When they are dry enough, i outline the robots with permanent marker to give them a more graphic look and to "clean up" the edges.  However, if the final product has a more painterly look, I leave it unaltered.

Before the children go home, they come back into the studio and (while supervised) they are given the permanent marker to add the smile, black dots for eyes and to sign their name on their works of art. Every child takes their painting home from the birthday party where I am sure they are proudly displayed and cherished for years to come!
